Dear Anna,
I am writing, on behalf of Art Not Oil, to all the exhibitors at this years BP-sponsored Portrait of the Year show.
I congratulate you on your success. However I am concerned that this exhibition is part of a BP greenwash campaign, as they seek to paint over their continuing abuses of both people and planet.
Restyled in 2000 as the eco-friendly "Beyond Petroleum", this hugely influential corporation continues apace with its policies of profit before responsibility.
On 29 May 2007, BP announced its "single biggest exploration commitment". BP and its Libyan partner, the Libya Investment Corporation (LIC), signed a major exploration and production agreement with Libya's National Oil Company (NOC). The initial exploration commitment is set at a minimum of $900million, with significant additional appraisal and development expenditures upon exploration success.
The green re-branding seems a touch premature!

BP is also building a pipeline to take oil out of Baku in Azerbaijan. The first phase of the pipeline, completed in 2003, is now carrying 32 million tonnes of oil a year. BP and partners are currently negotiating to expand the pipeline to 67 million tonnes a year.
Prior to construction, several non-governmental organisations reported serious concerns over alleged expropriation of land, lack of environmental measures, failure to pay compensation for loss of land and loss of farm income.
BP has also signed agreements with Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey which make it exempt from any laws - including environmental and labour - that may affect its profits.
The needs of BP, such as its demand for water, will be put above those of local people.
The company is also involved in projects in the environmentally sensitive Sakhalin oil and gas fields. This area is home to the Western Grey Whale and an important breeding ground for many rare birds.

While BP continue with business as usual, they are striving to pull the wool over the eyes of the general public by investing in reputable events such as Portrait of the year.
We at Art Not Oil would be delighted to show your work in our on-line gallery and are interested in your opinions.
Thank you for your time.
Yours Sincerely,
Howard Balmer
